Live edge table: how to choose your top
A live edge table is often ordered without seeing the exact top, since every piece of wood is different. This guide answers the questions we hear most: which type of top to choose, what it costs, how you pick your piece and how delivery works.
What is a live edge slab?
A slab is a large wooden top, and "live edge" means the side follows the natural shape of the tree instead of being cut straight. At Exotik Mobilier, our slabs are mostly suar wood, but we also work with rosewood and teak, all imported directly with no middleman. We turn them into dining tables, kitchen islands or large desks. No two tops look alike: the edge, the grain and the colour change from one piece to the next.
Three ways to make your table
1. The one-piece slab
The top is cut from a single piece of suar trunk, with no joints. It is the most striking option: bold grain, contrast between the dark heartwood and the pale edge, and a thickness you notice.
- 5 cm (2 in) top: 178, 211 or 249 cm long (70, 83 or 98 in), from $1,599 with legs.
- 7 to 10 cm (2.75 to 4 in) top: 160 to 300 cm long (63 to 118 in), from $1,299 with legs.
2. The assembled top
It is made of several solid suar boards glued side by side, with live edges that follow the shape of the wood. It is still solid wood (no particleboard or veneer). The advantage: a regular size and a more accessible price.

3. The straight cut
Love solid wood but prefer clean edges? We also make straight-cut tops, for a more modern dining room. Our straight-cut rosewood table, for example, comes in 178, 203 or 239 cm (70, 80 or 94 in), from $1,199. Tell us about your project: depending on the tops in stock, a straight cut is possible.
How it works, step by step
- Choose your format: the type of top, top only or complete table, and the length that fits your room (our dining table size guide helps you calculate).
- Order online or in store.
- We send you photos of the available tops so you can pick yours, along with your legs.
- We prepare your top at our Montreal warehouse: sanding, finishing and mounting on the legs. Usually 3 to 7 business days, sometimes a little longer depending on the finish.
- Pick it up or we deliver it. Delivery time is added to preparation.
Choosing your legs
Our tables are mounted on black metal legs. The two most popular styles:
- U legs: a clean, simple look that leaves plenty of room for knees and for chairs at the ends of the table.
- X legs: a more graphic look that draws the eye under a thick top.
If you buy the top only, you can also set it on your own legs or on a kitchen island.
A slab for the kitchen: the suar countertop
For an island, our solid suar countertop is 5 cm thick and comes in 178, 203 or 249 cm long (70, 80 or 98 in), 76 to 99 cm wide depending on the piece. It is sold as a top only; custom cutting and finishing are available on request. From $799.
Cracks, knots and colour: what to expect
A solid top reacts to the humidity in your home. Small cracks can appear at the ends or around knots, especially in winter when heating dries the air. This is the sign of real wood, not a defect, and it does not weaken the top. Keep the room's humidity between 35 and 50% and keep the table away from baseboard heaters and fireplaces. Before you order: measure your access
A 2 m solid wood top is heavy and does not bend. Measure your doors, hallways, stairs and turns before choosing the length.

Frequently asked questions
Do I see my top before it is prepared?
Yes. After your order, we send you photos of the available tops and you choose yours. You can also come and pick it at the warehouse.
Is an assembled top real wood?
Yes, it is solid suar. The boards are simply glued together to form a wide, regular top.
Can I get a slab with straight edges?
Yes, a straight cut is an option. Write to us or stop by the warehouse: we will look at the available tops together.
Can I use a slab as a desk?
Yes, the top alone sits very well on desk legs. Check the leg height (about 75 cm for a desk).
